SmartBMS Utility is built by Kühner & Gehrke Development, a two-person team based in Berlin.
Why we built this
We started SmartBMS Utility because the official apps for our own battery packs were clunky, closed-off, and left basic questions — like "why is cell 4 always the hottest?" — unanswered. Three years and more than a decade of combined software experience later, it's grown into a proper tool for the solar, off-grid, and camper community, with an app store presence in dozens of countries.
Our approach
We build for the person who actually wants to understand their battery system, not just glance at a percentage. That means real per-cell data, configuration you control, and a policy of keeping everything on your device instead of a cloud we could lose or lock you out of.
What we optimize for
Privacy by default
Battery data is processed and stored locally on your device — we built it this way because it's what we'd want for our own packs.
Built by the people who use it
We run this app on our own battery setups. Rough edges get fixed because we hit them ourselves, not because a ticket got escalated.
Direct support
Support emails go to the two of us, not a queue. No macros, no tiers.
Free hardware updates
Adding support for new BMS hardware, like our recent JK integration, is a free update — not a reason to charge you again.
